These suggestions both seem somewhat basic so I wouldn't be surprised if you are well aware of them but I can't think of anything else that is causing the problem. Ideally, in all scenarios, you only want one unit to engage per side because the extra units will become tired from fighting while not contributing anything that the primary attacker can't do. The one thing you need to make sure you're doing is instead of sending all your units to attack one unit that is central to then enemy but command the units 1 by 1 into separate enemies that they are nearest/best suited for fighting your unit.Ĭity battles will inevitably turn into some sort of moshpit but in these cases you don't want to send all your units if you aren't getting a flank. Guard mode just means that the units won't continue an attack unless commanded to when an enemy disengages. I generally pick Roman, Greek, or Carthaginian factions in Rome, so I'm at a bit of an unfair advantage, but even when I'm fighting a army cloned from my own, I crush them).Īny advice on winning Medieval II battles? I really love this game and I'm good at the strategy aspect (so I can reliably just autoresolve my way to world conquest), but I don't like having to be so overwhelmingly better-resourced that I can rely on chance to win the day. Tactics in this game don't make any sense to me (which is weird, b/c I'm very good at Napoleon and Rome/Europa Barbarorum.

I just have no idea how to play with Medieval troops. Even if I surround from behind or charge with cav, there's no real effect - my troops at the front may just break fast enough for theirs to turn around and keep fighting.Īnd this isn't even on hard mode. And troop/armor quality has nothing to do with who wins - it's anyone's guess. Two neat, tight little lines hit one another, everyone spreads out in giant ass circles, and they fight for 5-ish minutes until one of them is 80% dead and breaking. Even when I have better troops than the enemy, even when they're positioned better, even if they outnumber the enemy, even if I flank and charge with cavalry. Whenever I play (I play medieval ii, kingdoms, and stainless steel) everything turns into a giant moshpit. Even outnumbered 3:1, I'll reliably win 9/10 battles I play, even on very hard. Played Rome, Empire, and Napoleon, and I'm generally able to win battles fairly easily. I'm a Total War veteran, and I'm actually pretty good at most Total Wars. Think we missed one?
